Types of machine
Pay lines
The most common slots are the single line pay machines
with the pay line horizontal across the centre of the
symbol windows. If these winning symbols appear in a
line you know you have some money coming.
Another popular variation is the any position compensation
play. These pay out when certain symbols appear anywhere
on the glass. For instance, two wild cards above or
below the centre pay line and one on the line may return
one hundred coins. Had all three been on the pay line,
the return may have been four hundred, one thousand,
or maybe ten thousand coins depending on the machine
and the number of coins played. This feature can be
found on both single and multiple pay line machines.
Number of reels
Despite that three reel machines tend to dominate the
casino landscape, you may find machines offering 4,5,6
and even 7 reels. It is usually safe to assume that
your winning prospects will diminish in direct accordance
with the number of reels you play. There are however
casinos that boast that players have an equal chance
of winning on a three reel machine as they do on a four
reel.
Multipliers
Although these are the most common types of machines
they are not necessarily the most popular. Despite this,
there can be one major factor that can attract the professional
player. There is no penalty for playing less than the
maximum number of coins. Each coin will buy a multiple
of each winning payout, and irrespective of how many
coins you opt to insert, all winning symbols on the
pay table will pay out.
Option-buy machines
Option buy machines have many names, most of which
are generally derogatory, particularly when a player
appears to have spun a winning combination and receives
not a penny in return.
Instead of each additional coin buying you a bigger
payout, option buy slots give you more winning symbols.
If you do not wish to see the bigger combinations hit
and return nothing, you must insert maximum coins to
cover the entire pay board.
True option buy machines offer additional payout symbols
on the second, third and fourth coins, if the slot accepts
that many. As a group, especially if there is a high
number of possible payout combinations, option buys
have busy pay boards which can be deceptive because
the symbols bought with the extra coins can appear very
similar to those that pay out on the first coin.
You should take time to sit down and study those header
boards to be sure you know precisely what you are buying
with each coin. To tap the bigger payouts you must play
maximum coins every spin. This is the only way to give
yourself a fair chance of conserving your stake and
winnings.
